The landscape around Guilin looks almost imagined: steep limestone hills rise abruptly from fields, with rivers threading between them. Guilin is a useful arrival point, but many travelers will enjoy spending more of their time around Yangshuo, where the scenery becomes part of an ordinary afternoon. You might walk a riverside path, stop at a village café, or watch the light change over the peaks without going very far at all. This is a good pause between large cities. The best plan leaves space for weather, small detours, and a day that is deliberately less full.
Make room for these.
Landmarks are the beginning. The time between them is part of the trip.
Yulong River countryside
The Yulong River threads through the countryside around Yangshuo.
The river winds past the tower-like hills that define the region. Choose a licensed cruise or an established riverside viewpoint according to your time and interests. Different boats cover different sections, so look at the actual route instead of booking on the phrase “Li River” alone.
02
The Yulong River countryside
遇龙河
Around Yangshuo, riverside lanes and fields invite a slower day. Walking or a suitable bicycle route can be as rewarding as a raft experience. Keep the route modest, allow for heat and rain, and ask locally which paths and river activities are currently accessible.
03
Xingping
兴坪
This riverside town makes a useful base for another perspective on the surrounding peaks. Combine a walk through the town with nearby river views rather than trying to collect every photo spot. Check the location of your return transport before wandering farther along the river.
04
Guilin’s riverside and lakes
桂林两江四湖
Guilin itself works well for a relaxed arrival evening. Walk a manageable section of the central waterfront and look for the city’s distinctive hills among the buildings. This is a gentler introduction than arriving after a long journey and immediately transferring out into the countryside.
A STARTING POINT, NOT A SCHEDULE
A few days, well spent.
Our suggested route leaves space to wander. Check opening days, reservations and weather before committing.
DAY 1
Arrive beside the water
Use Guilin as a gentle arrival day: check in, try a bowl of rice noodles, and walk the central waterfront. Confirm the next day’s transfer and any boat booking. If arriving early and staying only three nights, transferring directly to Yangshuo may suit you better.
DAY 2
Make the journey part of the trip
Choose a verified Li River cruise route or a land transfer with time for riverside scenery. Settle into Yangshuo and leave the afternoon light. Find a dinner spot away from the loudest streets if you want a quieter evening after the journey.
DAY 3
A countryside day at your own pace
Explore the Yulong River area with a walk, a manageable cycle, or an operating licensed raft route. Stop often rather than covering maximum distance. Add Xingping on a separate extra day if you have time; the river landscapes deserve more than hurried transfers.
Let the food be part of the trip.

Convenient for meals and transport arrangements. Choose a side street if you want sleep and easy access to restaurants without being above nightlife.
Yulong River countryside
Best for waking up to scenery. Ask about meals, luggage transfers, and transport after dark; a beautiful rural location may require more planning.
Getting around
Think of Guilin, Yangshuo town, Xingping, and the Yulong River as separate places rather than one walkable destination. Arrange transfers between bases and explore locally on foot or by bicycle where conditions suit. Yangshuo railway station is near Xingping, not in Yangshuo town, so check the onward journey. Avoid building a tight connection around river transport, since weather and operating arrangements can change.
